Observation is a wonderful skill to develop. It can inform us of so much and save us time and energy. We can learn a lot about our surroundings, environment and ourselves by observing our interactions and the world around us.
You have probably observed how cleverly squirrels forage for food and hide them for later use and how carefully they cross the street, vigilant not to get run over by cars. They are also versatile and nimble, playfully and quickly covering a lot of ground, jumping on walls and tree branches. They are resilient and resourceful.

Observing our animal friends in nature, or our pets at home, can help us discover or connect more deeply to our own nature. We can see that we, too, are resilient, resourceful, clever, adaptable, playful and in harmony with nature. If we take the time to relax and connect with nature, it will show us the way.
Observing our own thoughts is also important. How often do we discern between our own thoughts and those we pick up from others? For example, have you ever gone to a supermarket and ended up buying items that were not on your shopping list? Maybe you bought a carton of ice cream but later felt guilty and regretful because your plan was to cut down on sugary snacks and lose weight. Chances are you picked up another shopper’s thoughts of craving ice cream.
Being observant also means noticing how we talk to ourselves. Do we berate or encourage ourselves? Thoughts turn into words, words turn into actions, and actions turn into habits.

Finally, observing subtle messages we receive through our metaphysical perceptions can help pave our path and lead us to successful, fruitful outcomes. Inspiration and insights, gut feelings, an inner knowing, and signs, symbols and pictures are aspects of our intuition and inner communication system that act like a compass or inner radar giving us gentle nudges days, weeks and months ahead, pointing us in the right direction. We just need to observe and pay attention!
To help you be more observant, you can:
- Spend time relaxing and observing nature. You can even set an intention for something you would like to learn.
- You can stay anchored to your goals and remain true to yourself by being observant and seeing the doors of opportunities available to you.
- Let your thoughts shape the future you desire. Affirm what you want to experience—such as “The perfect opportunity is on its way to me”—and visualize yourself living it fully, with joy and confidence.
By being observant we can stay anchored, resilient, guided and self-empowered.
